Nineteenth Sunday in

Ordinary Time

August 9, 2009

TODAY (Green)                            NEXT WEEK (Green)

1 Kgs 19:4-8                                                      Prv 9:1-6

Eph 4:30—5:2                                              Eph 5:15-20

Jn 6:41-51                                                       Jn 6:51-58

Here is another new revelation in the gospel text: the bread of heaven isn’t without its cost. For Jesus, the cost is the cross. The bread of life is the bread of self-sacrifice. To eat the bread of life is to eat the bread of suffering. To encounter Jesus by eating the bread of life is to take upon ourselves Jesus’ life of self-giving. This is why the gospel is so difficult: we, too, must die in order to live forever.
